Charleston police release more information about crash involving fire department vehicle

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police have released more information about a deadly collision in Charleston involving a Charleston Fire Department SUV.

Charleston police said in a Thursday afternoon news release the CFD SUV was traveling east on Lee Street West on the city’s West Side at about 6:14 p.m. Wednesday when the SUV struck a passenger car that had traveled into the intersection from Ohio Avenue.

The collision, which was into the driver’s side door of the car, claimed the life of Glenna Woodson, 82, of Charleston.

Investigators said their preliminary investigation “indicates the CFD vehicle was responding to a dispatched call with its emergency lights and siren activated.”

Woodson died a short time after the collision. The fire department employee was also taken to the hospital.

The name of the driver of the fire department SUV has not been released.

Charleston police said the crash remains under active investigation.

Those who may know something about the crash are asked to call the Charleston Police Department Traffic Division at 304-348-6470.
