CHARLESTON. W.Va. — Several hundred residents turned out for birthday cake Saturday at the state Culture Center in Charleston to celebrate West Virginia Day.

“We are thrilled to see so many people coming through the doors of the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston and to Independence Hall in Wheeling today to celebrate our state’s 163rd birthday!” said Ennis Smith, Deputy Secretary for the WV Dept of Tourism. “Today is an opportunity to celebrate our beautiful state’s fascinating history and culture, and to get outside to appreciate the Mountain State’s by hiking a trail, wading in a waterfall, or even visiting one of our Almost Heaven Swings.”
In issuing a proclamation, Gov. Patrick Morrisey said today seemed a little extra special.
“As we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, West Virginia Day reminds us that our State’s story is deeply woven into the story of our nation,” Morrisey said. “From the founding of our State during one of America’s most challenging chapters, generations of West Virginians have shown what it means to stand for freedom.”
More than 250 people were served birthday cake at the capitol.
