FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down north east of downtown Fairmont Monday night.
National Weather Service (Pittsburgh) Meteorologist Jeff Cravin said a weather spotter along Speedway Avenue made the report around 6:07 p.m. Survey teams are confirming the damage in the area.
“Near Norwood and Meadowdale along Speedway Avenue and those reports were exactly where the Doppler radar here in Pittsburgh showed the rotation,” Cravin said.
Just about 10 minutes after that touchdown, Cravin there was another report of wind damage immediately to the east. A tornado has not been confirmed as the cause of the damage there but Cravin said survey teams will also assess that area.
“In the 1300 block of Bunners Ridge Road,” Cravin said. “That’s a little bit to the east, southwest of Forksburg and a little east of the community of Canton.”
Monongalia County MECCA 911 Executive Director Jim Smith said they had several reports of trees down and heavy rains affecting roads. The most serious damage he said was along Flaggy Meadow Road and the state Department of Highways was on the scene as of Tuesday morning.
“There was a large amount of water going over that road making it impassable and the DOH is already on scene this morning getting that fixed,” Smith said.
Several trees were also reported down, but there were no serious injuries reported during the storm.
“Over on Canton Road, Earl Core Road, and Memorial Highway we had reports of trees down,” Smith said.
A Preston County Homeland Security spokesperson said no serious reports of damage were received.
