Couple charged after baby overdoses

POCA, W.Va. — A Putnam County couple is in custody after their one-year-old overdosed on fentanyl.

Brittany Jeffers and Charles Turley

Putnam County Sheriff Bobby Eggleton said Charles Turley, 33, and Brittany Jeffers, 31, both of Poca, are charged with felony child neglect causing injury.

“This makes me sick,” Eggleton said during an appearance Wednesday on MetroNews Midday. “I am a grandfather of a one-year-old and I can’t imagine my little grandson being exposed to something like that. It’s heartbreaking and we’re going to make sure the guilty parties are punished.”

Emergency responders who were dispatched to the scene Tuesday at Sargent Square Apartments used Narcan to revive the chilid.

“Thank God for our ambulance crew. Thank God for Narcan. This little baby was given that and revived, taken to the hospital and appears to be doing just fine now,” Eggleton said.

Eggleton said Turley and Jeffers told deputies they were at Town Park in Poca and their daughter had picked up a plastic baggie and put it in her mouth. Eggleton said video surveillence at the park didn’t match that explanation.

“They weren’t there,” Eggleton said. “We conducted a search warrant at the residence. We found drug paraphenilia and we found two Xanax pills just laying on the floor.’

The baby had fentanyl in her system.

Police later found Turley and Jeffers in a nearby church parking lot. They were arrested and taken to the Western Regional Jail.

The baby is being treated at Vandalia Health CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital. State CPS has taken custody of the child.
