Fire destroys apartment building in Summers County

TALCOTT, W.Va. — Talcott Fire Chief Bill Costomiris says an apartment building in Summers County is a total loss after a Sunday morning fire.

The blaze was first reported just after midnight Sunday morning at the Hedrick House Apartments in Hinton. Fire crews arrived and learned all residents of the building had been evacuated. Residents were evacuated from another building in the three building complex.

But, the fire was fully involved and visible from several miles. Interior attack of the fire was halted as the structure became unstable and the roof started to collapse.

Along with the Talcott Fire Department, crews from the Summers County Fire Department, Forest Hill VFD, Pipestem VFD, Jumping Branch-Nimitz VFD, Hinton Fire Department, Tri-County VFD, and Alderson FD also responded. When the buildings started to collapse, a request was made for the ladder trucks from the Lewisburg and Fairlea Fire Departments to assist in battling the blaze.

Nobody was injured. The state Fire Marshal is on scene investigating a cause for the fire.
