CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The winner of a $2 million Powerball ticket sold back in May showed up at state Lottery headquarters in Charleston this week to pick-up a check.
The ticket, which was purchased at the GoMart in Shinnston prior to the May 23 Powerball drawing, was claimed Tuesday.
The ticketholder chose to remain anonymous.
The winning ticket matched the five numbers drawn that night but not the Powerball. The player did choose the Power Play option which doubled their winnings.
“We love this,” Acting Director David Bradley said in a Wednesday news release. “Anytime we have a winner, we are ecstatic, but to have someone win $2 million is just so life changing. Purchasing that Power Play option doubled their prize, and it’s just $1 more per play. It’s a great feature, but no matter how exciting all of this is, we always want to encourage responsible game play.”\
There have now been six $1 million or more winning tickets sold in the state since 2024. It’s the 18th time a big ticket has hit this decade, the lottery said.
