WESTON, W.Va. — It’s a muddy mess in Weston following what could turn out to be record flooding.
Stonecoal Creek, the West Fork River and all its tributaries flooded Tuesday evening during heavy rains.
“All of the side streams coming in were record height and everything converged here in Weston,” Dan Cooley told MetroNews as he waded through water on the streets of downtown Weston Wednesday morning.
There was still several feet of standing water.
“There’s still cars underwater. The center part of town you still can’t get through right now. It’s a mess,” Cooley said.

Cooley, who lives in Harrison County, was in Weston to hopefully to begin the clean-up of the church where he attends and a coffee shop the church runs.
“The water mark on the building is about four feet high. So the basement was completely submerged. Right now in the basement of the coffee house there is still four feet of water,” he said.
Other water marks as high as seven feet have been measured in other parts of Weston.
Some residents had to spend the night in the upstairs of their homes after their first floors flooded. Cooley talked to one such couple.
“The water has receded out of their first floor. They can walk around in their house right now but they still can’t get out of their house because it’s too deep outside,” he said.
Longtime residents said the water levels were higher Tuesday than they were in the historic 1985 flood.
