Nine golfers broke par in the opening round of the 93rd West Virginia Open at The Resort at Glade Springs.
Two seeking their first win in the event lead the way through 18 holes.
Pat Carter and Chris Williams both fired a 4-under par 68 on the Cobb Course to set the pace.
Carter, a 13-time West Virginia Amateur champion, carded four birdies without a bogey and fired a 3-under 33 on the back nine.
Williams, a graduate of Winfield High School who went on to play collegiately at West Virginia University, matched Carter’s score on the strength of five birdies against one bogey.
Half of the 132-member field played the Cobb Course and the other half started on the Stonehaven Course.
The lowest round at par-72 Stonehaven belonged to a pair of professionals in Mason Williams and Lucas Cromeenes, both of whom finished at 2-under 70.
A Bridgeport native who played collegiately at Georgia Southern and now plays full time on PGA Tour Americas, Williams shot a bogey-free 34 on the back nine.
Cromenees, the head professional at Pete Dye Golf Club, had three birdies without a bogey for a 33 on the front nine.
Poca native David Scragg started on Cobb and is the only other golfer at 2-under par. Scragg, also a professional, previously played and coached at the University of Charleston.
A quartet of golfers shot a 1-under par 71, including three — Ryan Bilby, Christian Brand and Owen Elliott — that opened the event at Stonehaven.
Logan Lagodich also fired a 1-under par 71 at Cobb.
The second round begins Thursday at 8 a.m., with golfers alternating courses from the one they played Wednesday.
A cut to the top 60 golfers and ties occurs after 36 holes before Friday’s final round, which will be contested at Stonehaven.
