CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Public Service Commission has approved a reduced two-part rate adjustment for Mon Power and Potomac Edison.
The alternative plan splits the increase into smaller chunks and was approved Friday by the PSC.
The approved plan okays an increase of $3.65 per month beginning this month and another $4.01 per month beginning June 1, 2027.
The increase will boost the average monthly residential bill from $137.86 to $145.52, a 5.6 percent hike.
The alternate plan approved by the PSC strikes the proposed increase that would have been about 13 percent.
Mon Power and Potomac Edison have agreed not to file another general rate increase before April 1, 2028.
At the PSC, the utility staff and an expert witness for the Consumer Advocate Division were both opposed to the increase.
“At a time when costs keep increasing, thereby causing rates to increase, we are trying to find new ways to establish rates for the companies that are reasonable and not discriminatory, that help the customers and that do not require a base rate case every year or year and a half,” the PSC said in a news release.
