HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Retired Cabell County circuit judge and former longtime prosecutor Chris Chiles has died, according to a social media post from current Cabell County Prosecutor Jason Spears.
”Chris had a tremendous impact on the legal community of Cabell County and throughout West Virginia. He devoted much of his life to public service—first as Prosecuting Attorney and later from the bench—and leaves behind a legacy that will endure for many years,” Spears said in a Facebook post. “If you can think of any large trial in 80s, 90s, and into the next millennium, Chris was at the helm. His skills as a Prosecutor were unmatched. Watching him cross examine a witness was a joy, and he was an expert at his art.”
Spears also said the loss was very personal.
“Chris hired me as a young prosecutor and gave me an opportunity that helped shape the course of my career. Like so many young lawyers, I learned by watching those who came before me, and Chris gave me the chance to learn firsthand the responsibility that comes with representing the people and seeking justice,” Spears said.
Spears added he would be forever grateful for the confidence Childs showed in him.
“My thoughts and prayers are with his family, especially his wonderful wife, friends, former colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched.
“Rest in peace Chris. Thank you for taking a chance on a young lawyer. I will always be grateful.”
No other details about Chiles’ death have been released.
