SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police investigating the death of a 12-year-old South Charleston boy from earlier this week say the driver who struck him committed no traffic violations.
Hunter Combs, a student at Dunbar Middle School, was struck by a car Monday night as he was crossing MacCorkle Avenue (U.S. Route 60) with a friend.
South Charleston Police Captain Andrew Gordon released the results of the investigation Thursday.
Gordon said the driver stopped immediately after striking Combs and stayed on the scene and fully cooperated with police.
The driver showed no signs of alcohol or drug impairment, Gordon said.
The accident reconstruction team with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office said its preliminary calculations showed speed was not a factor.
Video surveillance confirmed the driver had a green light at the time of the accident, Gordon said.
“The South Charleston Police Department continues to offer its condolences and support to Hunter’s family, friends and anyone affected by this horrific tragedy,” Thursday’s release said.
