BECKLEY, W.Va. — Police have released more information about an arrest made at a high school football game on Friday night.
Police said they received a tip at around 9 p.m. that a man in the stands at the Woodrow Wilson-Huntington game had a firearm. Stephon Tyreese Yancy, 20, reportedly resisted officers when they confronted him. Officers said they brought Yancy into custody and found that he had a gun.
Yancy was charged with possession of a deadly weapon on school property, violation of a protective order, and obstructing an officer.
According to police, Yancy was out on bond following previous charges. He’s being held on $5,000 bail in the Southern Regional Jail for Friday’s arrest.
“We would particularly like to thank members of the public who alerted officers to this situation, their vigilance allowed us to remove this unacceptable danger from a youth sporting event,” Beckley Deputy Police Chief Morgan Bragg said. “It is a felony offense to possess any firearm or other deadly weapon on the grounds of an educational facility.”
