Ohio man sentenced to nearly two years in prison for string of ‘zombie drug’ overdoses in Charleston last September

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — An Ohio man has been sentenced to nearly two years in prison for distributing a ‘zombie drug’ that caused dozens of overdoses in the Capital City.

Anton Jeffries (WVRJA)

Anton Jeffries, 32, of Akron, Ohio, pleaded guilty in September to possession of fentanyl, a controlled substance. He was arrested and charged last September in connection to nearly three dozen drug overdoses on Charleston’s West Side.

At the time, Charleston Deputy Police Chief Jason Webb told MetroNews that those who overdosed took fentanyl that was laced with the drug Xylazine. It’s commonly referred to as trank or the zombie drug.

Jeffries had been serving supervised release for only six days before he was arrested, the U.S. Attorney for Southern West Virginia’s Office said.

He was previously convicted in federal court in August 2019 of possession with intent to distribute meth, heroin, and fentanyl.

Jeffries was sentenced one year and nine months in prison, followed by four years of supervised release, on the federal charges.

He was sentenced two months ago by Kanawha County Circuit Judge Dave Hardy to 360 days of time served on the state charges he faced.
