West Virginia ski resorts are primed and ready for traditionally their biggest weekend of the season.
West Virginia Ski Ares Association spokesman Joe Stevens says the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday weekend provides skiing for parts of four days for thousands who travel to the Mountain State.
“They get in early enough on Friday to ski Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, and then they stay around on Monday to ski during the morning on Monday,” Stevens said.
Winterplace Ski Resort in Raleigh County got several inches of new snow Thursday just in time for what the resort hopes is a busy weekend. Other resorts have been able make snow at night to go with a natural snow base.
Temperatures have been relatively mild in January but Stevens says the ski resorts haven’t been terribly impacted.
“We still have the most open terrain in the region,” he said.
The weekend forecast is also shaping favorably.
“Temperatures in the 30s at the resorts with overnight temperatures in the teens, which will be good for the skiers in the day and the snow-makers at night,” Stevens said.
