Mercer man to face murder charges following death of estranged wife

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — Mercer County Prosecutor Scott Ash said Tuesday he plans to charge a man with murder next week after his estranged wife died recently at a Roanoke, Virginia hospital.

Authorities said Kayla Neel, 20, of Bluewell, died Sunday, 12 days after she and Dakota Walls, 21, were shot allegedly by Michael Neel, Jr. The 25-year-old Neel has been in jail since the shootings. He’s being held on $350,000 bail.

Walls, who was shot in the neck, remains hospitalized.

Ash said Neel is expected to have charges increased to murder during a court appearance Monday in Mercer County Circuit Court.
