CHARLESTON, W. Va. — The bitter cold decided to stick around as the snow started to make its way to the Kanawha Valley Monday morning. Crews have been out plowing the streets of Charleston, but they certainly have their hands full with an expected six to ten inches of snow.
City of Charleston Public Works Director Gary Taylor said they’re trying to keep the trucks on the road, but with the continuous snowfall, it makes the clean-up a lot more difficult.
“We have 17 trucks on the road right now. We’re running all the hill sections, all the areas around the hospitals, and the main downtown area, but with the weather and the temperatures, it’s just making it real tough on us,” said Taylor.
The temperatures well below freezing are causing slick road conditions, making the snow stick. Taylor said crews have been out all morning, with the main crews starting at 6 a.m.
“We had our trucks loaded. When the first flake started to fall, we immediately put them on the road,” he said.
Taylor said the lower lands will most likely not get plowed due to the amount of trucks they have and all the areas they have to cover in Charleston.
“A large percentage of it is on the hills, so our main focus is going to on the hills and of course we would try to get around the schools,” said Taylor.
Road crews will be out all day during the winter storm.
