Crowded job fair in Martinsburg; senator says state’s unemployment rate too high

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — People filled the Martinsburg Mall Monday during a job fair, hosted by the office of U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, WorkForce West Virginia and the 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard.

The numbers were exactly what Sen. Manchin was looking for, and he says that most applicants even came out an hour early to get in line, the senator said.

“Place has been packed all morning long. Every employer is looking to hire somebody and keep them right here, in this part of our state,” Manchin said.

Procter & Gamble in particular drew in a huge crowd as this was their first public job fair appearance since opening their website to the public last Thursday. The worldwide company is building a new manufacturing plant at Tabler Station.

Monday’s job fair was the first of several Manchin has planned.

“We’re gonna do another one in southern West Virginia,” Manchin said. “We’ll be moving all around the state.”

There were more than 60 businesses in attendance at Monday’s event, according to organizers.
