MARTINSBURG, W.Va – There are some common themes when it comes to concerns about West Virginia’s tax system that emerged Tuesday night during a tax-reform forum at Martinsburg High School.
Del. Eric Householder (R-Berkeley), who sits on the Legislature’s Joint Select Committee on Tax Reform, helped organize the event that allowed residents to voice their opinions and offer ideas about taxes.
Many who spoke said the state’s gas tax needs to be lowered, and more needs to be done to offer tax relief to seniors and small businesses.
Comments made Tuesday night will be presented to the committee before they craft recommendations to put before the full legislature.
Responses to an online survey will also be included.
Householder said the committee has gotten a lot of information regarding the state’s tax code, and are awaiting the results of data modeling being done by West Virginia University that will give them an idea of how some “what-if” tax-reform scenarios might play out in real life.
He was uncertain if any legislation would be forthcoming in next year’s legislative session.
More than 40 people attended the forum.
