Former race horse shot, euthanized

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Authorities are looking for clues regarding a retired race horse found shot multiple times at a Berkeley County farm Friday.

Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Scott Richmond tells the Herald Mail the horse had to be euthanized due to its injuries.

It is believed the shooting occurred between 8 a.m. and lunchtime Friday in a field at Pleasant Ridge Farm.

Stephanie Duffy, whose daughter Jasmine had owner the horse, whose name was tres, for about five years, said it does not look like it was a hunting accident.

She said the thoroughbred was in the field with several other horses when the shooting occurred.

Capt. Richmond said Tres was shot twice in the face and once in the stomach.

Berkeley County Animal Control is investigating the incident.

So far no witnesses have come forward.
