CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Democrat John Perdue, running for a sixth term, will be returning to office as West Virginia Treasurer.
Perdue was first elected in 1996.
Ann Urling, a Republican and senior vice president at Summit Community Bank, defeated Larry Faircloth in the primary.
The Libertarian in the race was Michael A. Young.
Both Perdue and Urling said they would retain popular programs such as efforts by the office to return unclaimed property and support for Smart529 college funds.
Urling, though, said she could make the office more transparent and efficient.
No Republican had been elected treasurer in West Virginia since 1928.
The treasurer is the chief financial officer of the state. The position pays $95,000 a year in West Virginia.
