Update: Victim of fatal hit-and-run in Beckley identified

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Authorities have released the name of the person struck and killed by a vehicle near downtown Beckley Sunday.

23-year-old Clint Owen Vernieu of Beckley was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident on Robert C. Byrd Drive.

The suspect vehicle reportedly fled before officers arrived.

Based on evidence collected at the scene, the vehicle involved is believed to be either a Lincoln MKX, 2009 or 2010, or a 2009/2010 Ford Edge. A Beckley Police Department spokesman said investigators are looking for both vehicles because the parts of those models are interchangeable. The vehicle is believed to be dark in color and likely has front-end and passenger-side damage.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Beckley Police Department or Crime Stoppers of WV.
