3 WVU students to be commissioned new military ranks

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Three West Virginia University students will be commissioned Friday as second lieutenants in the United States Armed Forces.

Matthew Chapman, of Silver Spring, Maryland; Emily Hummell, of Charleroi, Pennsylvania; and Leonardo Sanchez, of Manassas, Virginia; are preparing to leave for training. Chapman will be in the Ordnance Corps, Hummel with the Medical Service Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve, and Sanchez with the field artillery of the Virginia Army National Guard.

According to Lt. Col. Travis Betz, a West Virginia University professor of military science, said the service obligations vary from branch and job classification.

“For instance, if we put an officer into the aviation corps, flight school and all the technical qualifications, that service obligation can be longer,” he said.

Friday’s ceremony will be at the Erickson Alumni Center at 10 a.m. Retired Army Col. John Fenzel will serve as the ceremony’s keynote speaker.
