President Donald Trump has won West Virginia’s five electoral votes over former Vice President Joe Biden.
The Associated Press called the race right after the polls closed at 7:30 p.m.
Late on Election Night, with 93 percent of precincts reporting, Trump had 68 percent of West Virginia votes to Biden’s 30 percent.
The Republican nominee defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton 67.9 percent to 26.2 percent four years ago.
Trump has remained extremely popular in West Virginia.
A MetroNews West Virginia Poll based on interviews conducted between Oct. 1-6 showed that 53 percent of likely voters supporting President Trump’s reelection with 39 percent supporting former Vice President Biden.
That poll showed some support for third-party candidates too, with 4 percent backing Libertarian Party candidate Jo Jorgensen and 1 percent supporting Howie Hawkins of the Mountain Party. At the time, 3 percent weren’t sure.
In terms of popularity, the West Virginia MetroNews West Virginia Poll showed Trump with overall approval of 56 percent of likely voters. Forty-three percent said they strongly approve of Trump.
Trump’s job approval ratings decreased five percentage points in West Virginia, from 61 percent to 56 percent during the past ten months (from Dec. 2019 to Oct. 2020).
In contrast, 57 percent said they disapprove of Biden, the Democratic nominee for president, according to the West Virginia Poll. Forty-five percent said they strongly disapprove of Biden.
