West Virginia-based firm marks 200 years

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Jackson Kelly law firm is marking its 200th anniversary during a retreat this weekend.

The firm, the sixth oldest in the country, has been celebrating the anniversary on its website for the past several months, according to communications director Josh Copen.

“If you look at it, some of our founding members were involved with the forming of the state of West Virginia, the state Constitution, former attorneys who went on to prominent roles in the state including Homer Holt, governor of West Virginia,” Copen said.

Copen links the firm’s longevity to its relationships with its clients.

“It’s that kind of commitment to our clients that I believe has kept us around for 200 years,” Copen said.

Community involvement also ties in with the firm’s history, Copen said.

“We spend a lot of time with United Way, the American Heart Association and other groups, it’s very important,” he said. “We’re constantly doing things like that so people will know we are more than just a law firm.”

Jackson Kelly has 10 offices in six states. The firm is also celebrating its 40th anniversary of its Morgantown office this year.
