Deputy who struck, killed girl in Cabell County resigns

CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. — The Cabell County deputy who struck and killed a young girl back in December has resigned from the department.

Jeffrey Racer, who had been on administrative leave since the incident occurred, resigned as a Cabell County deputy Friday, according to a news release from sheriff Chuck Zerkle.

“At the present time I am not at liberty to talk about personnel matters or respond due to pending litigation,” Zerkle said.

Racer was off-duty at the time when he hit and killed Laney Hudson, 13, on Friday, Dec. 30, near the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 31st Street.

For months following the incident, people had called for an investigation to take place from both the West Virginia State Police and the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office. Many protested outside the state capital building.

Racer has not been charged.

West Virginia State Police investigators said alcohol was not a factor with Racer and that the light was green when the incident happened.

Prosecutors said no information could be gathered from the black box in Racer’s cruiser due to how old the vehicle is.
