UPDATE: Sentencing in Clay County murder case postponed

UPDATE  Sentencing postponed until June 5.

CLAY COUNTY, W.Va. — The sentencing for a Clay County man accused of shooting and killing his mother and lighting her vehicle on fire is set for Monday.

Johnny Dale Rogers II, 35, of Widen, admitted to State Police of the acts and plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter, use or presentment of a firearm during the commission of a felony, destruction of property and third-degree arson, according to court records.

Rogers told troopers he killed his mother Darlene Faye Jackson, 65, in April of 2022 at her home on Kanawha Street in Widen. After shooting her, he set her car on fire, with her body inside the vehicle, then pushed it over an embankment along Widen Ridge Road.

According to a criminal complaint, Rogers initially told investigators his mother didn’t return home after running some errands. Rogers later admitted to killing her.

Sentencing is set for 10:30 a.m. in Clay County Circuit Court.
