CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. — An Ohio man is hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a confrontation with Logan County authorities Tuesday morning.
Logan County Sheriff P.D. Clemens said one of his deputies and an officer with the Chapmanville Police Department responded to a call of shoplifting at the Dollar General Store in Chapmanville around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. When they arrived they observed two suspects, a man and a woman in a vehicle in the parking lot of the neighboring business Advance Auto Parts.
They also noticed the suspect’s vehicle, with Ohio plates, was reported stolen from Lawrence County, Ohio. Clemens said the two law man approached the suspect and initially he was cooperative.
“At first the guy put his hands out the window and obeyed commands, but then he put it in reverse,” explained Clemens.
The Chapmanville officer lunged into vehicle from the passenger side and grabbed the steering wheel trying to stop the vehicle.
“The guy continued to back up, but then he started to pull forward and was trying to run down our officer,” Clemens said.
The Logan County Deputy opened fire on the approaching vehicle and shot the driver ending the threat.
The driver, identified as Barry Ethan Vaughn, from Ironton, Ohio was flown by HealthNet to CAMC General hospital. His condition is unknown. He’ll face a number of charges including attempted murder of a police officer.
Authorities also arrested the woman in the vehicle. She is Marlana Dawn Adkins, 38, of West Hamlin, W.Va. She’s charged with malicious assault on an officer, transporting stolen property, transferring and receiving stolen property, and conspiracy.
According to Clemens the Chapmanville officer suffered a concussion in the incident. The deputy was not injured. The investigation into the incident continues.
