Huntington man to be sentenced for DUI crash that killed teenage boy

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. —  A Huntington man will be sentenced Monday morning in Cabell County Circuit Court in a DUI that killed a teenage boy.

Samuel McCoy pleaded guilty to the October 2023 DUI crash in November.

According to police, McCoy crashed into a car, where Jacob Spurlock,16, was a passenger, at the 20th Street and 8th Avenue intersection. Police say they were pursuing McCoy after he failed to pull over in Wayne County for a traffic stop.

The criminal complaint said that McCoy ran a red light which in turn caused the crash and ended the pursuit. Investigators did say that McCoy did admit to using heroin before the crash.
