LEWISBURG, W.Va. — Greenbrier County Sheriff Bart Baker confirmed for MetroNews the weekend shooting which claimed a life came from a handgun at a home in the Clintonville community. Baker also confirmed the young victim was age 14.
The Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department and local EMS were dispatched to the home Saturday evening around 4:30 p.m. There the teen was dead of the gunshot wound and an investigation was launched. According to the Sheriff there were four other teens in the house at the time and three of them were actually in the same room with the victim whose name was not released. The Sheriff said there were adults present, but they may have been outside at the time.
“As we all did at that age, they were hanging out with their buddies,” said the Sheriff. “I believe there were adults there, but they were outside. It was just teenagers and friends hanging together, nothing nefarious in that aspect.”
Baker said they are keeping a lid on most details of the investigation and wouldn’t reveal the circumstances around the shooting because of the nature of the incident.
“We’re really not releasing that right now. Obviously it’s a tragedy, but nobody is in custody. It has to be completely investigated before we would release anything of that nature,” the Sheriff added.
The other four teens were interviewed individually by investigators on Saturday evening with parents, prosecutors, public defenders, and Child Protective Services present and involved in the questioning. The Sheriff said he was awaiting a final report on the investigation from his deputies as well as a report from the state Medical Examiner before any further information could be released.
