Homecoming big for existing WVU students too

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia University student body is continuing the celebrations hosted on campus as part of Homecoming Week.

WVU Senior Assistant Director for Student Involvement at Morgan Prunty said thousands of Mountaineers have been showing their spirit across campus ahead of the start of Homecoming Weekend on Friday. This includes opportunities to highlight Greek Life activities throughout the week as well as school spirit events ahead of the annual Homecoming Parade that will trot down High Street Friday night.

“Homecoming is always a really exciting time here on campus,” Prunty said. “The students get excited when all of the alumni come back, they have friends returning. It’s always a really good, fun energy at this point, and we will not let it rain on our parade, even if it does happen to rain.”

According to Prunty, the WVU student body has participated in Homecoming Week festivities since early Tuesday through several different events and activities hosted around campus. This includes the annual Greek Games that were hosted in parts of the Downtown and Evansdale campuses as well as stops by the WVU Alumni Association truck, which will kick into high gear as part of Mountaineer Friday. Students also participated in the WVU Day of Service as part of annual homecoming traditions.

“The Greek community here on campus is divided up into different teams, and each of those eight teams competes throughout the week,” Prunty said. “There are service events, there are spirit events, we had our Greek Games, and the winning team is going to be announced at the football game on Saturday.”

The Homecoming Parade begins Friday at 6 p.m. on High Street in downtown Morgantown. This year’s Homecoming Court includes Izayah Everett, Gabrielle Custer, Nicholas Albright, Lakyn Campbell, and Reagan Frazier; and (front row from left) Ruby Jackson, Zoe Burleson, Ariana Davidson, Emma Bates, and Alison Stone.

WVU Homecoming Week festivities will wrap up with Saturday’s football game against Cincinnati. Alumni groups from across the country are expected to be in attendance and hosting tailgates outside the stadium with the winners of the Greek Games and the crowning of homecoming royalty announced at halftime, Prunty said.

“And then of course, wrapping it up on Saturday with our football game and the crowning of our homecoming royalty during halftime,” said Prunty.

Prunty also noted that the university, along with the WVU Alumni Association, also emphasized the importance of history on campus as part of the university. This will include a tour of the Elizabeth Moore Hall that will take place on Friday at 5:30 p.m. as well as welcoming events hosted at the Erickson Alumni Center starting on Friday at 12 p.m. Activities that aim to show Mountaineer Spirit from both current students and alumni.

“It really kind of gives the students context for how important they are and what it really means to be a Mountaineer,” Prunty said. “They are carrying on that legacy every class that comes in, so having that connection piece to our alumni and a little bit of our history is really important.”
