JACKSON COUNTY, W.Va – A bald eagle has died after being struck by a car on US Route 33 near Ripley.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the bird was hit on Friday and transported to the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia for assistance.
ACCA posted an update to its Facebook page on Monday, stating that the eagle suffered a badly fractured upper wing bone, spinal trauma, and significant thoracic trauma. The bird was treated with pain medication, anti-inflammatory medication, antibiotics, and fluid support with hopes of a veterinarian being able to perform surgery when it became stable, but it died before that was possible.
The center praised the work of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, its veterinary staff, and several community members for their assistance in attempting to save the eagle’s life.
