Election filing deadline this Saturday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The filing deadline for the May Primary Election is this Saturday at 11:59 p.m..

Kris Warner

“Please don’t wait until the last minute to file your candidate Certificate of Announcement,” Secretary of State Kris Warner said in a news release this week.

Those candidates are able to file in person at the WVSOS office at the State Capitol, or either regional offices in Clarksburg and Martinsburg.

Candidates for a county office have until noon on Saturday, January 31, to file with the County Clerk at the county courthouse, and candidates for municipal office have until the close of business on Friday, January 30, to file at the town hall or city building.

“With the seriousness of the weather, candidates should consider all of their options to be sure that they file before the deadline,” Warner said. “And if they use the U.S. Mail, they should probably mail their forms and fees no later than this coming Wednesday.”

Steve Williams filed for the House last Friday.

Former Huntington mayor and 2024 Democratic gubernatorial nominee Steve Williams filed to run for House of Delegates last week.

Williams will be seeking the Democratic nomination in the 24th Delegate District, a seat currently held by Del. Patrick Lucas, R-Cabell, who is seeking re-election.

Williams admitted Tuesday on MetroNews Midday that he’s gotten bored in the last year and still has much to contribute.

“I came to realize there are some who were meant to sit in the stands and there are some who are meant to be on the playing field and that’s what I came to realize this past year, I need to be on the playing field,” Williams said.

Williams first served in the House more than 40 years ago. He said he sometimes voted in opposition to the Democratic majority of which he was a member. He said Tuesday it was a learning experience.

“While I would go jumping out in front of the train saying, ‘We can’t do this!’ and then they would just run over me I thought I need to get on the train and find how to get to the right seat,” Williams said. “After a little while I began to learn the process.”

Williams said being one of 100 again may not sound attractive to some but “I have 40 years of wisdom under the belt right now.”
