Berkeley County deputy credited with saving the life of a suspect

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A Berkeley County deputy is credited with saving the life of an individual he was pursuing in the Falling Waters community.

In a press release, Berkeley County Sheriff’ Rob Blair explained Deputy Merson initiated a traffic stop on I-81 when he noticed a vehicle a travelling in a reckless manner. The truck took off and Merson pursued the driver off I-81 onto Route 9 and then into a private neighborhood. The chase continued on Route 11 northbound toward Maryland. Authorities say the suspect vehicle struck another vehicle as they were starting across the Potomac River Bridge into Maryland.

The crash disabled the suspect’s vehicle, but he continued on foot toward Maryland before he jumped off the bridge and into the Potomac River. Moment’s later he was yelling for help.

Merson entered the water from the C-and-O Canal boat access and swam to the suspect. He was able to render aid and pull the suspect back to the shore safely where EMT’s were available to provide treatment. The driver of the vehicle which was struck was not injured.

The suspect, identified as Edward Light, 56, of Martinsburg was taken into custody after being treated for his injuries. He was wanted for numerous active warrants from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department and had been actively sought by the agency. Individuals told police he previously made statements he’d rather die than return to jail. He’s in the custody of the Washington County, Maryland Sheriff’s Department for charges there. He was also charged with fleeing with reckless indifference for the pursuit.

Sheriff Blair issued the following statement:

“Deputy Merson’s actions on February 19th demonstrate the highest standards of law enforcement professionalism and courage. In a matter of moments, he transitioned from pursuing a fleeing suspect to risking his own safety to save a life. His quick decision-making, composure under pressure, and selfless commitment to preserving life reflect great credit upon himself and this agency. We are proud of Deputy Merson and his unwavering dedication to protecting our community — even when that includes those who have chosen to break the law.”
