Inmate dead at Hazelton federal prison

HAZELTON, W.Va. — An inmate at United States Penitentiary (USP) Hazelton has been found dead, according to a press release from the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Employees found Jerome Jones, 35, unresponsive around 8:35 p.m. Tuesday and life-saving measures were initiated. Emergency medical services were called and the inmate was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead the following day.

Jones was sentenced in the Western District of Tennessee to a 27 1/2 years for carjacking and use of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. He had been in custody at USP Hazelton since April 7, 2025.

No inmates or employees were injured in the incident.

The FBI has been notified.
