CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A man has been arrested after gunshots heard near Laidley Field led to the cancellation of the Tudors Relay Track Meet Saturday.
Charleston Police Deputy Chief Tony Hazelett said the suspect, Jakai Harrison, 20, of Piedmont, South Carolina has been arrested and is charged with four counts of wanton endangerment.
Hazelett said shots were fired near the stadium at around 12:50 p.m. Officers immediately responded to the scene and determined the shots came from a driver going east on Piedmont Road.
Police identified Harrison as the shooter using surveillance footage from nearby businesses.
Charleston Police stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.
“Officers will remain in the area to maintain an increased presence and ensure the continued safety of the community,” Charleston PD said.
Kanawha County Schools confirmed in a statement the track meet had already started when shots were heard. The meet was halted right away.
No injuries were reported from the incident, and Kanawha County Schools said no shots were fired inside the stadium.
Meet directors opted to cancel the remainder of the event once police confirmed shots had been fired.
“Kanawha County Schools appreciates the immediate response from the Charleston Police Department and the KCS Security team,” the statement from Kanawha County Schools said. “The safety of students, staff, families, and spectators guided all decisions made during the incident.”
