Kanawha County sees damage and outages after Wednesday storm

CLENDENIN, W.Va. –Severe weather moved across West Virginia on Wednesday, leaving some areas with damage, some minor flooding and power outages.

C.W. Sigman

In Kanawha County, more than 1,800 outages were reported, according to Appalachian Power’s outage map.

Earlier Wednesday afternoon, radar indicated that a tropical air mass helped create a heavy storm that impacted the Sissonville and Pocatalico areas, as well as areas north along Interstate 77.

Kanawha County Emergency Manager C.W. Sigman said some minor flooding was reported in Kanawha County.

“During the tornado, we had one of our folks reported some high water in one of the local places that gets water all the time, it’s just a poor drainage issue,” Sigman told MetroNews Wednesday.

Sigman said creeks are low, the ground is fairly dry, and any flooding would likely be caused by clogged drains.

In the Clendenin area, there were reports of baseball-sized hail.

Kay Summers

Clendenin Mayor Kay Summers said a couple of businesses sustained roof damage due to hail, wind, and rain.

“The Mexican restaurant just opened yesterday, and I think some of the roof of the building came off today, it didn’t actually come into the building, but some pieces came off,” she said.

She also said there were trees down and some limbs covering the roads, which emergency crews were working to clear Wednesday evening.

Summers said she was nervous during the storm because she did not know what would happen.

“It was scary to me at first, because I didn’t know, I always have flash backs to the flood, it’s been 10 years since we had the flood and so I was so worried about what was going to happen,” she said.

The Mountain State will continue to see stormy weather throughout the rest of the week.

Sigman said that while there is not much damage right now, residents should continue to monitor the forecast for the remainder of the week.

“I think we need to stay tuned for the next few days and keep check of the weather,” he said. “We’ve not got much rain and I’m in Charleston right now, we’ve not got much rain, we need some rain, but towards the next few days we have rain every day, and as it goes along, we need to keep an eye on it.”

Temperatures are also expected to drop to the low 70s for the remainder of the week and then warm back up the beginning of next week.
