HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — After spotting top-seeded Huntington St. Joseph’s a run in the bottom of the first inning, Gilmer County scored eight unanswered runs to secure a spot on Championship Saturday with an 8-4 win over the Irish in the Class A semifinals.
“They are a great team and a fundamentally sound team. That is the best team, if not one of the best teams in the state,” said Gilmer County head coach Jacob Wolfe. “We had a good day today. We had a good day. It is tough when they are that fundamentally sound to beat a team and to get that last out.”
A Cam Kellar sacrifice fly to score Mason Watts gave the Irish (32-4) an early advantage. However, the Titans scored one in the third, three in the fourth and four more in the fifth to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Freshman Roddick Page went 3-for-3 and he drove in five runs before leaving the game due to injury. He also pitched four innings while allowing one run on one hit.
“He’s tough, ain’t he? He’s tough. His confidence is his best thing and nothing really bothers him. We thought we had the best field whenever he pitched and he came out and did a great job.
“And then look at the stick. What was he, 3-for-3? Great kid, great at bats, great job.”
Kolten Holbert, who earned the win in the quarterfinal round, pitched 2.2 innings of relief. Remington Huffman collected the final out for GCHS after the Irish used a three-run double from Kellar to pull within four runs at 8-4.
“[Holbert] came in quickly there and did a great job. He held them down. As I said, that’s a tough team.”
The Titans will play for their first state baseball championship since 2001 Saturday at 10 a.m. Gilmer (29-7) awaits the winner of the second Class A semifinal between No. 3 Sherman and No. 7 Pendleton County.
“My old coach, it was his first year, Joe Frashure [in 2001]. It is exciting. It is a dream come true. Whatever happens, we are going to give our best. We’re excited to be there.”
