Charleston police make arrest in stabbing, have person of interest in shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police have two active investigations underway into violent incidents Sunday evening.

Tony Hazelett

Charleston Deputy Police Chief Tony Hazelett told MetroNews that officers responded to a “domestic-related” stabbing at 7:45 p.m. in the 1600 block of Pansy Drive. He said officers also responded reports of a shooting in the 2000 block of Hutchinson Street at around 11:25 p.m.

Hazelett said an Alum Creek woman was arrested for the stabbing. Leona Barry, 48, was arrested for malicious wounding. Hazelett said the victim was Dale Snodgrass, 58, of Charleston.

Hazelett said Berry entered Snodgrass’ residence and stabbed him. Snodgrass suffered a “minor cut” to his stomach.

“It appears to be that the suspect could have been intoxicated at the time,” Hazelett said. “They got into an altercation, an argument, and she (Berry) pulled a knife and stabbed him.”

Hazelett said Berry left the scene after the stabbing. Police found her “a short distance” away from the residence.

Police have a person of interest in the shooting, Hazelett said.

He reported that the victim, Jordan Wooding, 24, of Charleston, was “uncooperative” when law enforcement arrived. Hazelett said Wooding was suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen and a leg.

“We were able to determine that the shooting happened outside and was a drive-by style shooting,” Hazelett said.

Hazelett said that Wooding is in stable condition.

“We worked on it today and we were able to establish a person of interest in that case,” Hazelett said. “We’ll hopefully charge someone this (Monday) evening or tomorrow (Tuesday).”
