Man charged with firing shots outside Laidley Field pleads not guilty in circuit court arraignment

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The man charged with firing a gun outside of Laidley Field in Charleston during a track meet in early May is scheduled to go on trial later this month.

Jakai Harrison

Jakai Harrison, 20, of Charleston, was arraigned Wednesday in Kanawha County Circuit Court after his recent indictment on four counts of wanton endangerment with a firearm.

Harrison pleaded not guilty and Kanawha County Circuit Judge Tera Salango scheduled his trial for July 13.

Charleston police said shots were fired near the stadium at around 12:50 p.m. on May 2. Officers immediately responded to the scene and determined the shots came from a driver going east on Piedmont Road.

Police identified Harrison as the shooter using surveillance footage from nearby businesses. He later told police someone was following him.

The track meet was quickly cancelled. There were no injuries.

Salango continued Harrison’s bail at $100,000. He remains at the South Central Regional Jail.
