MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A Hampshire County man is facing multiple charges after being accused of being involved in an injury DUI crash and assaulting a healthcare worker at the hospital.
Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department responded to a crash Sunday on Point Marion Road near the intersection of Stone Mine Road that involved entrapment.
A woman was cut out of the wreckage and taken to the hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.
When deputies spoke to Zachary Spacht, 41, of Bloomery, he told police he was not the driver at the time of the crash. However, deputies said, Spacht went on to make conflicting statements about where he was in the vehicle and showed signs of impairment.
Witnesses that arrived moments after the crash told deputies they saw Spacht exiting the vehicle from the driver’s door.
Deputies said they found drug paraphernalia in Spacht’s possession and detained him. Deputies then said Spacht showed several signs of impairment during field sobriety tests.
While Spacht was receiving medical treatment following the arrest he is accused of biting and kicking a healthcare worker suffered a visible bite mark. Deputies said they witnessed Spacht headbutt the arm of a healthcare worker and that he attempted to kick and bite at other healthcare workers. He is also accused of making direct verbal threats to one of the workers as well.
Deputies also learned Spacht was driving with a suspended/revoked license at the time of the crash due to multiple prior convictions for DUI-related offenses.
Spacht has been charged with DUI with injury, two counts of battery on a healthcare worker and one count of assault on a healthcare worker and is being held in the North Central Regional Jail.
