West Virginia bishop responds to Pope Leo’s cancer surgery

WHEELING, W.Va. — The Bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston is speaking out about Pope Leo XIV’s recent lung cancer diagnosis.

This following the Pope’s surgery on Tuesday.

In a statement – Reverand Evelio Menjivar said, “I join with the faithful of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and indeed those of all faiths from around the world in prayer for the health of our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV. We are thankful that his condition was discovered at an early stage and that his surgery was successful. We will continue to pray that he makes a full recovery. May God, the Divine Physician, keep him in His care and guide the minds and bodies of all those who will care for our Holy Father.”

While lung cancer was suspected, further tests confirmed the presence of lung adenocarcinoma which led to surgeons removing the lower lobe of his right lung.

The Vatican says Pope Leo returned to his room after the surgery and is recovering.
