MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Portions of Interstate 79 were at a standstill Friday following crashes that affected the north- and southbound lanes.
West Virginia state police said a Shop-N-Save truck and a tractor-trailer hauling timber crashed before noon on I-79 north between the Goshen Road exit and the weigh station, near the Monongalia and Marion County line.
Lt. Chad Tierney said cleanup was expected to take most of the afternoon as crews had to clean up timber and diesel fuel that had leaked. While one lane was being kept open, Tierney said drivers were to expect both northbound lanes to be closed when tow trucks were removing those big rigs.
A second accident on southbound I-79 involved up to eight vehicles. That happened closer to the Goshen Road exit. While no serious injuries were reported, at least one lane was shut down.
