MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Students in Berkeley County are back in the classroom Monday, but there are more of them now than when summer began in June.
The school system grew by 453 students during the last school year, and based on enrollment over the summer, they expect to see a similar number this year, Berkeley County School Superintendent Manny Arvson said.
“We’re expecting in that 300 to 400 range again,” Arvson said.
Along with the new students the county hired 87 new teachers, with more needed.
“As of last week we were up 250 students. and those were basically K-8 and folks who had enrolled over the summer,” said Arvson.
As of Wednesday there were 25 vacancies to fill by the start of school Monday.
