Mountain Health extends vaccination deadline for workers

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Mountain Health Network, which is made up of Cabell-Huntington and St. Mary’s hospitals in Huntington, is extending its vaccination deadline for its workers.

The deadline, which was Sunday, has been extended while hospital officials wait for further guidance on both the state and federal level in connection with mandates. A new deadline would depend on that guidance, Mountain Health said.

A new state law, passed last month by state lawmakers, will require employers to provide vaccine exemptions for religious and health reasons. The law doesn’t go into effect until late January. There’s also a federal mandate expected soon from the Biden administration.

Mountain Health has also seen vaccination numbers increase among its workers, according to Monday’s statement.

“Due to the positive response by our employees to the program and the excellent progress they have shown in taking this important step for the community‚Äôs safety, we are extending our Oct. 31 compliance deadline,” the statement said. “This will allow additional time for staff who have obtained their first shot to become fully vaccinated and take advantage of the added protection the COVID-19 vaccine provides for themselves and others.”

Mountain State joins large systems like WVU Medicine and CAMC which have also extended vaccination mandate deadlines for their workers. Both WVU and CAMC report that 95% of workers have been fully vaccinated.
