GASSAWAY, W.Va. — The smallest Kroger store in the Mid-Atlantic Region will close later this summer. Cincinnati based Kroger confirmed Friday the store in Gassaway, W.Va. will shutdown August 22.
The store is one of 60 stores across the country the company plans to close in the next 18 months due to poor sales.
The Gassaway store was set for closure in January 2023 due to poor profits and needed upgrades. Then U.S. Senator Joe Manchin got involved and managed to convince the company to leave it intact because of the distance to the next closest grocery store. Those living in the region will now have to travel I-79 to Weston or Elkview to visit a full service grocer.
Company officials said those employees of the Gassaway store will be offered transfers to other Kroger operations.
