CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia retailers are hoping for a big weekend with the annual Sales Tax Holiday.

“I think shoppers across the state will see great deals on items that have been specifically ordered and well-stocked,” West Virginia Retailers Association President Bridget Lambert said Friday on MetroNews Midday.
The holiday is aimed to take advantage of the approaching school year.
The following items are exempt from the sales tax through Monday, according to the governor’s office:
–Certain clothing with a purchase price of $125 or less
–Certain laptop and tablet computers with a purchase price of $500 or less
–Certain school instruction material with a purchase price of $20 or less
–Certain school supplies with a purchase price of $50 or less
–Certain sports equipment with a purchase price of $150 or less
Lambert said the holiday also applies to shopping online.
“This actually extends to online purchases as long as the complete transaction happened during this period of time even though the item would be delivered after that,” Lambert said.
The holiday could save West Virginia shoppers a projected $3.4 million this weekend, Lambert said.
House of Delegates Minority Leader Sean Hornbuckle led the tax holiday bill through the legislature six years ago. It eventually passed with bipartisan support. Hornbuckle, also a guest on MetroNews Midday Friday, every little bit helps.
“That was on the forefront of our minds when we did this back in 2019 was West Virginia families, being able to save them anything that we could,” Hornbuckle said.
