SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — BridgeValley Community and Technical College President Dr. Casey Sacks is moving on to a new role, joining the United States Department of Education as its chief financial officer.
Sacks joined BridgeValley in 2021 and takes on an executive position in a department undergoing significant change under the Trump administration.
“I’ll be the chief financial officer at the Department of Education, so it’s really a large operational role. Even with some of the layoffs that have happened, we still have 2,000 employees at the U.S. Department of Education,” she said on 580 Live with Dave Allen.
In the new role, Sacks will oversee several important aspects of the department’s daily operations. She said she’ll be tackling issues that help keep the Department of Education running.
“My portfolio will include things like finance, obviously, but facilities, IT, human resources, and some of the really important functions that help an organization that’s that big do its job,” she said.
Looking back over her tenure at BridgeValley, Sacks looks at the school’s nursing program as a particular point of pride. She said BridgeValley students post scores on licensure exams that are competitive with much larger institutions.
“Our NCLEX pass rates are some of the highest that you see, even when you compare us to four-year colleges. We’ve got amazing business partnerships with both CAMC and WVU Thomas Hospital through that program. I’m really proud of the nursing program,” she said.
As Sacks moves on, she is also excited for what BridgeValley’s WIN Academy Early College program can do moving forward. She believes it provides an opportunity to high school students that the rest of West Virginia could take a lesson from.
“It is such an incredible opportunity for high school students to earn an associate’s degree while they’re still in high school. There’s nothing else like it in West Virginia, and it’s really special, and it’s something that would be worth replicating across the state,” she said.
Sacks will complete her last day as BridgeValley’s president on March 2.
