State police release information about fatal officer-involved in Preston County

TUNNELTON, W.Va. — State police released information Thursday about a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened in the Tunnelton area of Preston County last Friday.

Troopers said they responded to a call at 9:35 a.m. on July 10 along South Preston Highway that Joshua Tyler Roberts, 33, of Tunnelton, was threatening a neighbor with a machete.

Troopers located Roberts who was in a van. They said he was armed with a gun.

A news release said Roberts refused repeated verbal commands from troopers and raised the firearm toward the two officers. Both officers discharged their service weapons to stop the immediate threat, state police said.

Roberts died at the scene.

No other injuries were reported and the investigation is ongoing.
