BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — The Bluefield State University Board of Governors met in emergency session Thursday evening but announced no decisions following an executive session.

The meeting was listed as an “emergency meeting” on the Secretary of State’s open meetings webpage. The purpose of the meeting was listed as “Imminent Substantial harm to the institution.”
MetroNews reached out to the office of Bluefield State President Dr. Darrin Martin. The office said in a statement that it didn’t know much about the meeting.
“The Bluefield State University Board of Governors has called an emergency meeting for 4 p.m. today. University administration have not been provided information regarding the purpose of the meeting beyond what appears in the public notice. Because the meeting was called by the Board, the University administration cannot speculate about the meaning of the language used in the notice or what may be discussed,” the statement said.
Martin, a BSU graduate, became president at his alma mater in November 2024 after several months as interim president following the resignation of former President Robin Capehart in late 2023.
Martin led an effort when interim president to get the university back into the good graces of the Higher Learning Commission which determines the school’s accreditation after the HLC had issued a critical report in 2023 of the school’s governance.
