POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — A major deal for a new data center under construction in Mason County.
Various business reports Thursday said Anthropic which runs Claude AI will pay Nscale $45 billion over six years to rent about a third of the storage space coming at Nscale’s Monarch Compute Campus north of Point Pleasant.
Nscale has not commented.
Gov. Patrick Morrisey described the reports as ” an extraordinary vote of confidence in our state and the strategy we put in place.”
Morrisey also posted on X.
“Grateful to our Econ dev team and to Senator (Glenn) Jeffries for all of their work— we are going to lift up the standard of living in our state and achieve big things that have never been done before!”
Bloomberg News reported Anthropic will use 460 megawatts of power to be created at the site, using the first of three data center buildings planned for the campus.
Earlier this week, Nscale released the results of an economic impact study from the global accounting firm Ernst & Young. The report estimates that through the Monarch Compute Campus Nscale will generate 6,000 jobs over the next two years including 700 permanent jobs in Phase 1. Site Manager Jason Bechtle said those numbers are eye-popping.
“Seven-hundred (jobs) during Phase One of this project, of these high-skilled STEM trade jobs that are going to be right here for the taking,” Bechtle told MetroNews.
The EY study also projects tax revenues to reach $105 million with $87 million of that total headed to the Mason County school system. There would be $13 million for county government and $5 million for EMS and public safety.
Nscale gave the Mason County Board of Education $500,000 earlier this week for a worker training program to be developed through the school system.
